Hollywood's dynamic duos

Sultry actress Penelope Cruz and director Pedro Almodovar recently announced that they are working together for the fourth time. Their new film "Broken Embraces" comes out next year. Cruz has been a muse for the director, starring in 'Live Flesh' (1997), 'All About My Mother' (1999) and 'Volver' (2006). The News' Lisa Swan takes a look at other directors, and their own muses.

Marlon Brando's career was nowhere in the early '70s. But Francis Ford Coppola fought with Paramount Studios to cast him as Don Corleone in "The Godfather" (1972) (above during filming). Coppola won the battle, Brando won the Oscar, and then repaid the director by being a high-maintenance pain on the set of 1979's "Apocalypse Now," showing up overweight, out of shape, and uninterested in learning his lines. Brando ended up improvising much of his role as Col. Kurtz. The horror, the horror.

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have been partners in a variety of quirky - some might say weird - films. The two first hooked up with "Edward Scissorhands" (1990), then went on to make "Ed Wood" (1994). "Sleepy Hollow" (1999), "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (2007). Depp also provided the voice to the lead character in Burton's stop-motion animated film, "Corpose Bride" (2005).

Martin Scorsese has had several muses. Robert DeNiro and the director made some classic films together, starting with 1973's "Mean Streets." They also worked together in "Taxi Driver" (1976) (above), 1977's "New York, New York," "Raging Bull" (1980), "The King of Comedy" (1982), 1990's "Goodfellas," and "Casino" (1995).

But in recent years, Leonardo DiCaprio has been the director's new muse. He starred in Martin Scorsese's 2002's "Gangs of New York" (above), "The Aviator" (2004), and the Oscar-winning film "The Departed" (2006). The pair are also working on "Shutter Island" for 2009, and may work together on a bio pic on Theodore Roosevelt.

And Tom Hanks has also been a muse - and partner - to Steven Spielberg. They first worked together in 1998's "Saving Private Ryan," and have also done 2002's "Catch Me If You Can" and 2004's "The Terminal" together. In addition, the duo won Emmys for their production of the 2001 HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers."

Woody Allen's current muse - at least in the movies - is Scarlett Johansson. She has starred in three Allen films so far - 2005's "Match Point," "Scoop" (2006), and this year's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

Alfred Hitchock was known not just for appearing in every film he made, but also for working with actors multiple times. Cary Grant starred in the director's films three times - in "North by Northwest" (1959), in 1946's "Notorious," and in 1955's "To Catch a Thief."

Robert Redford - a director himself - had some of his noteworthy acting roles in Sydney Pollack's most memorable films. The two worked together in "Jeremiah Johnson" (1972), "The Way We Were" (1973), "Three Days of the Condor" (1975), "The Electric Horseman" (1979), "Out of Africa (1985) and "Havana" (1990).

Mel Brooks' muse - at least on the big screen - was Madeline Kahn. She appeared in four of the director's films - "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles" (both released in 1974), 1977's "High Anxiety" (above) and "History of the World: Part I" (1981). Brooks' muse in real life was the actress Anne Bancroft - the two were married for over 40 years. She died in 2005.

Robert Altman directed Lily Tomlin in "Nashville" (1975) - perhaps his best film - and "A Prairie Home Companion" (2006) - his last film. Here they are at the 78th Academy Awards, when Tomplin presented Altman with a lifetime achievement Oscar.

Oliver Stone cast Charlie Sheen as a naive young solider who gets an education in Vietnam in 1986's "Platoon," then had him star as a naive young stockbroker who gets an education in "Wall Street" (1987).

Quentin Tarantino directed Uma Thurman in 1994's "Pulp Fiction," and the Kill Bill saga (2003 and 2004.) Thurman proved to be the director's most memorable female star.
