Scene Stealer: Down in the Valley's David Morse
The man who made his name on St. Elsewhere has played a lot of different roles in his career, from sci-fi (12 Monkeys) to thrillers (Proof of Life). In May's Down in the Valley, he's the dad of a precocious teen (Evan Rachel Wood).

David Morse had so much to say about the roles he's played, it wouldn't all fit in the June 2006 issue's Scene Stealer column. PREMIERE.com is here with more.
Inside Moves (1980)
At six-foot-four, Morse was the perfect choice to play a pro hoopster in this underrated drama. Well, almost perfect.
DAVID MORSE: “For the screen test, I had to play with an ex-pro, so I obviously had something going on. But I totally lied to get the role. I had played a couple of times in a Y or something, but never made any of the teams I tried out for. I think it became really clear later on when all I had to do is just hit one foul shot, and twenty takes later they finally gave up and said, ‘Let's just move on.’”
Contact (1997)
Morse has two roles in this sci-fi thriller: Jodie Foster's father and an alien who looks like Jodie Foster's father.
“Originally, my character took her on a journey all over the Earth and the universe. Then it just got simpler and simpler... Essentially it became a scene on the beach. Jodie and I went up to Malibu with [Robert] Zemeckis, and he just shot angles of us with a small video camera, standing there with scripts in our hands. When they did the movie, a few of them flew off to a beautiful island somewhere, and shot everything without Jodie and I. We got the short end because we did green screen for three days, and our beach, literally was a little saucer of sand.”
The Indian Runner (1991)
In Sean Penn's directorial debut, Morse plays a smalltown lawman struggling with his troubled younger brother (Viggo Mortensen).
“When Sean’s father Leo was directing Saint Elsewhere, he told me that after Sean had seen Inside Moves, he had written me a letter because it had meant so much to him. But the letter never got to me. Then, when he was casting Indian Runner, he saw Desperate Hours which I had done with Michael Cimino. He called up Michael and asked about me and then Sean asked me to come and meet him.”
Proof of Life (2000)
While filming in the jungle, Mother Nature forced the cast and crew through a grueling detour.
"It was kind of a jungle location and there were landslides everyday. And there was only one road to get to [location]. One time we had left at four in the morning and there were trucks up ahead of us. And all of a sudden, a landslide, which must have been 50 feet deep, took out the whole road. It all happened between the trucks and ourselves. We had to go all the way around which was an eight hour drive. We ended up not shooting that day."
